Rethinking Debt Sustainability And Exploring Alternative Financing Models Better Suited To Africa’s Context

Hosted by: United Nations Development Programme
Status: Open Event

Event Overview

The event dialogue will bring together African leaders, economists, and global partners to redefine debt sustainability and financing for development across the continent.

Building on the Compromiso de Sevilla (2025) and initiatives by the African Union Commission (AUC), African Forum and Network on Debt and Development (AFRODAD), United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA), and the Open Society Foundations (OSF), the event responds to Africa’s growing debt vulnerabilities and the urgent need for context-driven solutions.

Discussions will move beyond traditional fiscal measures to emphasise responsible borrowing, transparency, and innovative financing models aligned with Africa’s development priorities.

Participants will explore how to restore fiscal space, strengthen debt governance, and support initiatives such as the African Leaders Debt Relief Initiative (ALDRI), advancing a new African narrative focused on resilience, equity, and transformative investment for sustainable growth.
