Sustainable Food Systems & Agriculture Task Force

Task Force Overview

The B20 South Africa Sustainable Food Systems & Agriculture Task Force is focused on building inclusive and future-ready food systems through innovation, investment, and cross-border cooperation.

Agriculture remains the backbone of many economies – powering livelihoods, nourishing communities, and fuelling trade. But this sector now stands at a crossroads, threatened by environmental change, rising input costs, and supply chain volatility. At the same time, it holds immense potential to drive sustainable development, particularly across Africa.

This Task Force is focused on four priority areas:

  1. Enhancing Labour and Capital Productivity:
Unlocking innovation and investment to improve yields, integrate value chains, and create jobs, particularly for Africa’s growing workforce.
  2. Ensuring Climate Resilience and Improving Livelihoods:
Promoting climate-smart practices, inclusive financing, and technologies that reduce risk and increase food security for small-scale farmers.
  3. Accelerating and Enabling Trade:
Strengthening regional trade and agro-processing infrastructure to reduce costs, cut losses, and link farmers to new markets.
  4. Promoting Sustainable Agricultural Practices:
Scaling regenerative approaches, digital tools, and context-specific sustainability standards that work for producers and the planet.

Together, this work supports a shared vision: modern, secure, and sustainable food systems that promote shared prosperity and resilience from farm to fork.

Final Task Force Recommendations

The recommendations reflect the vulnerabilities in global food systems exposed by climate shocks, conflict, and fragile supply chains. The Final Paper calls for resilient agrifood supply chains, expanded access to technologies and finance for farmers, and inclusive livelihoods for women and youth. It also stresses integrating trade into food security strategies and accelerating sustainable practices to achieve climate-resilient, productive agriculture.
